AWID – ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT
27 July 2022
AWID – Association fo Women in Development – is a global, feminist, membership, advocacy organization whose mission is to work to achieve gender justice and human rights for women around the world. This goal is pursued by addressing the challenges of oppressive generating systems together with organizations and individual women participating in extraordinary and powerful networking,
AWID succeeds in giving visibility to feminist practice through widespread outreach to amplify the realities on which it feeds, stimulating and facilitating or mutual exchange, strategy sharing, and sisterhood. Through this approach, elements of central to feminist networking are strengthened: active listening, solidarity, sharing of knowledge, and the development of impactful strategies. I have been an AWID member for a few years now, and I find it regenerating to be able to breathe that air of sisterhood that provides the right nourishment for my activist soul.
AWID recognizes great value in cultural and creative strategies to empower the fight against oppression and injustice. AWID members to date number more than 6,000 from over 180 countries.
Among the priority themes in AWID is the creation of feminist economies, and the rejection of the rhetoric that we have no alternative to the politics of massive extractivism and exploitation of natural resources: meaning that we have no alternative to exploitation, underpaid labor, the suffering and destruction of peoples, and the oppression of women.
White supremacy, colonialism and patriarchy are the “values” that have destroyed the world we live in. The global, inclusive, intersectional feminist approach can bring nothing but the growth and evolution of a world that regenerates its roots through self-determination, solidarity, and mutual recognition.
The history of the feminist movement, the existence of feminist economic realities, confront us with the concrete possibility of being able to go down this road. To do so requires generating global, constant, conscious pressure.
I invite you to discover AWID’s other priority themes, and if you get the urge to contribute to global women’s relations, you can sign up by clicking here.
Through stories, events, and an engaging narrative, AWID provides a place that serves as a stimulus and inspiration no matter how dated and/or deep the background of those approaching it for the first time.
